A symbol of power and prestige. Horses were essential to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), symbolizing power, wealth, and prestige. The aristocracy, including emperors and military officials, had a deep connection with horses, which were seen as symbols of status. These sculptures were often used in tombs or palaces to convey the strength and prosperity of the individual or family.
The people of this era had extensive contact with Central Asia, and many of the horses in the artwork from this period reflect the influence of foreign horses, particularly those from the regions around Persia and the steppes of Central Asia. This exchange is evident in the anatomy and features of the horses, which are depicted as larger, more muscular, and with a more spirited demeanor. The Tang period was an era of military expansion, trade, and cultural exchange along the Silk Road, and horses played a significant role in these developments.
